Highlight:
That veiw.
Challenge:
Vert km.Trent said this is the bit he has been dreading since the start. We had done this track (in the opposite direction) before and knew our incline was going to be steep! He is not a fan of hills at the best of times, let alone 1100m straight up.
With the busyness of West Sabine hut we were up earlyish (for us), and with bush cover untill 1400m, we covered some good ground with out worrying about the heat and sun.
Soon enough we meet trampers from Upper Travers and then John Tait huts. A quick hi to them broke up the hill, along with a more in depth catch up with Lois (who we first meet on the Mototapu track). We stopped for snacks and appled sun screen before we approached the last of the bush.
Just over one Hakarimata to go to reach the saddle.
Learning:
John Tait, his family and the Nelson tramping club constructed the orginal hut in1951.The materials were bundeled up in a size "suitable for adults to carry" shuttled over Lake Rotoiti and then staged up to the site.
