Highlight:

We spend the hottest part of the afternoon chilling at the recently build Waiau hut:

  • swim
  • clothing rinse
  • lunch
  • dinner

Challenge:

Following a break at Waiau hut we continued on to Waiua Forks. A southbounder had mentioned it as a place to camp to shorten the day up and over Waiau Pass.
The 5km/h we were doing this morning was exchanged for watching where every foot went along the avalanche screwen track.

I couldn't help think

Are we there yet?

We crossed the river and saw two tents on a small clearing. Around the corner we found a flat spot of grass and set up for the evening.
I was relived to find there actually was a place to pitch the tent alongside this rocky environment.

Learning:

We now approch some avalanche zones (May-November).
